Discover the magical island of Thasos and its secrets.

Thasos

A land praised since ancient times, still keeps its unique spirit today.

The first references about the inhabitants of Thassos comes from Mythology. According to tradition, Zeus, transformed into a bull, kidnapped Europe, the daughter of the Phoenician king Aginoras. Then her brother Thassos, after wandering without finding her, came to this island, and was enchanted by its beauty and wealth (mainly metals) and decided to settle in with the other Phoenicians who accompanied him. This is how the island got its name, which kept it until today. Some scholars believe that Thassos is the island of Calypso, Ogygia, which is mentioned in the 5th rhapsody of the Odyssey. On the other hand, there are scholars who connect Thassos with the island of the Sirens.

The history of the mines in Thassos is proven from ancient times, as it is a part of natural wealth, from lead to marble and gold. Due to the wealth of minerals and the fertile soil, Thasos was often targeted by Thracian tribes. At the end of the 7th c. BC Parians completely dominated the island and, taking advantage of the rich gold and marble mines, wrote a new era in its history, creating a strong city-state with colonies, navy and merchant fleet, with lively economic activity and cultural prosperity. It develops a vast trade network with the Ionia and the Aegean, Athens and Corinth and is fortified with walls. At the same time, the ties with the metropolis of Paros remain very close. After the naval battle of Salamis and the elimination of the Persian danger, Thasos stands again on the side of the Greeks. Until 1912 Thasos fell into the hands of many peoples, Arabs, Slavs, Ottomans and even Egyptians.

A great museum to visit in the Archeological museum in the capital of Limenas, but if you also wanna visit some places where the ancient spirit of the island still remains alive, then you should visit the Acropolis of Thasos and Arxaia Agora in Limenas, Alyki archaeological place, in Limenaria you can admire the old mines and an Palataki, a luxurious, big abandoned building. If you are into the folklore culture of the newest history you can visit the folklore museums in Kalliraxi, Theologos, Limenaria and Skala Potamias.

These days Thasos has developed into an island that combines the local life with tourism and the endless blue of the sea with the magic of the mountain. There a lot of people living on the island, keeping the life going on the winter, following traditions and also creating the modern side of Thasian culture.  Excellent products to try from the locals are olive oil, honey, olives, oregano and wine.
